HELLS ANGELS sergeant at arms

Edmonton's latest homicide victim was a 31-year-old musician and father of two.

Edmonton's latest homicide victim was a 31-year-old musician and father of two.

Andrew Block was found Tuesday with a fatal gunshot wound. He was in the driver's seat of a black pickup found in the Inglewood neighbourhood. The truck had smashed windows and a damaged tire.

Murray Turnbull, a friend of Block's since they both attended elementary school in Spruce Grove, said Block was trying to distance himself from bad elements in his life.

"He had already separated himself from that lifestyle and was really looking forward to a career in music," Turnbull said. "I truly believe he wanted to get out, but it's tough when it's all you know."

Block, who lived in the Edmonton area, had a young son and daughter, Turnbull said. He performed hip-hop music under the name Blaklistid. He developed a strong interest in music a year ago to honour a close friend who died.

"Andy wanted to excel in music," Turnbull said. "He wanted to entertain people and he had a natural ability for it. At the flick of a switch, he could make everyone in a room smile, make everyone laugh."

On Thursday, after his name had been released by police, Block's Facebook page quickly filled with mournful comments.

"You will be sadly missed and I hope you're in a better place now," wrote one friend.

So far, there have been no arrests in the case. Police spokesman Dean Parthenis said officers from the gang unit has been consulted in the case, but are not actively investigating.

Block was found in his truck, which was parked behind a duplex at the corner of 127th Street and 116th Avenue. The residents of that duplex said they did not recognize the vehicle.

In 2001, Block was convicted of manslaughter after an accidental shooting at a house party. While fooling around with a gun, a shot went off, went through a door and hit a man sleeping on the other side. Block received a three-year sentence.

Block is the 25th homicide victim of the year in Edmonton.
