More violence in Mexico, 12 gunmen dead | san, fernando, release - Brownsville Herald: "Gunfights in Valle Hermoso and San Fernando left 12 gunmen dead, six in each town, the Mexican Army announced.
According to a press release, the encounters took place Friday in both cities, where military convoys were patrolling.
The first firefight was reported at the San German rural area on the outskirts of San Fernando. A military convoy came under fire and returned fire, the news release said.
San Fernando is approximately 86 miles south of Brownsville and is known to have a strong presence of members of the Zeta organization. San Fernando is where a group of Zetas is accused of murdered 72 immigrants last August, and where U.S. missionary Nancy Davis was fatally shot and Georgia trucker Alberto Munoz attacked last week.
According to the news release, in Friday’s encounter, soldiers killed six gunmen, seized one armored SUV, a regular SUV, three grenade launchers, one grenade seven assault rifles, and 79 ammunition magazines."
